PROGRAMS
Little Rock provides four distinct, but interrelated, programs to respond to the immediate needs of these children, namely:
- Education
- Nutrition
- Health
- After School program
- Income Generating Activities
Education
Little Rock aims at laying the foundation for the child to acquire skills & abilities for the intellectual growth which will help them to excel in life. The teaching techniques used emphasize learning by playing, self motivation, sensory observation, sight, touch, smell and hearing stimuli, rather than lecturing and memorization. To facilitate learning, Little Rock provides a prepared environment to allow physical and practical activities in:
- Learning the two national languages (read, speak, listen, write, drama)
- Mathematics (count, add, subtract, sort, compare)
Physical education (play, run, exercise, team work, swim)
- Art and craft (create, work with colours, shape, thread, cut), which exposes the child to practical life skills fundamental for growth of visual and muscular perception
- Science(our environment, plants,animals and self)
- Music, movement and dance
- Nutrition, health and safety
- Practical application of moral and Christian values as a vehicle for building a foundation for responsible youth and adulthood.
All the children joining primary school after Little Rock and those already in primary school are provided with a full set of uniforms, books, pencils, and exercise books). In Kibera, this is what determines whether a child stays in school or drops out (a statistic in free primary education).
Achievements:
- 30 Pioneers are in class/grade 3, most are top 10 in their classes
- 27 children in grade 2 graduates 2005
- In 2007 32 children joined class/grade 1
- Linkage and sponsorship from Colgate Palmolive EA Ltd
- An after school program, providing children a safe place to come study, get counselled, and where they are given the opportunity to explore their gifts (in art, music, dance, and recreation)About 120 graduates and brothers & sisters have benefited from the mentioned program.
- A soccer team of 40 boys and girls has been started and they have participated in both local and international tournaments of under 7 and 8 years. The boys and girls have proved to be talented and have won trophies in both tournaments.
Nutrition
The feeding program supports the child's overall education and development, as no child can effectively learn on an empty stomach. The centre provides at least one well-balanced meal every day around lunch time, and a mid morning snack of porridge made from millet at 10 o'clock.
Achievements:
- Curbing malnutrition at the right stage/age and common ailements eg.(colds and flu, ringworms)
- Linkages with Kingdom business, family support and individual donations of food
- Providing food baskets for desperate homes (2kg of beans, rice, sugar, flour, cooking fat and toiletry), sponsored per month or as funds are available.
- Healthier children who are able to cope with school work.
Health
As in nutrition, one cannot educate or teach a sick child. Most of the children have health issues that, if intervened early enough, can be avoided. Most parents don't take their children for immunization. The centre works with organizations that deal with healthcare to sensitize the parents of the importance of immunization.
The parents are educated in HIV Aids, family health and reproductive health and educating them on feeding the children on balanced diet
One cannot handle Pre School children at their formative years without intervention in their health issues. The mobile clinic for GOAL Kenya comes to the centre twice a month to treat the children and offers referrals for complicated cases to Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi hospitals. HIV positive children are linked with Lea Toto program which provides them with ARV's and food. Parents are trained on firstaid, how to keep themselves healthy even after testing positive.
Achievements:
- Linkage with GOAL Kenya, Amref and Lea Toto for general health.
- Linkages with Colgate Palmolive Ltd for dental/oral health
- Providing opportunities for children who need surgery for different ailments that would have affected them negatively

For Empowering partents sustainability, Little Rock has started income generating activities, like weaving, quilting woodwork and sandal making, involving the parents of the Little Rock children. The products made through these activities are sold at the centre, online (see “Little Rock Shop”) and at various trade fairs.
