Providing a nurturing and inclusive start (foundation) for vulnerable children |
 |
OUR PROGRAMMES
We provide an all rounded holistic programme that caters for the children’s whole development; physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social well being. All our programs began because there was a need to full fill.
|
EDUCATION: Little Rock aims at laying the foundation for the child to acquire skills & abilities for the intellectual growth which will help them to excel in life. The teaching techniques used emphasize learning by playing, self motivation, sensory observation, sight, touch, smell and hearing stimuli, rather than lecturing and memorization.

HEALTH CARE; healthy child, healthy growth…… achieved milestones
Our current health care support, therapeutic care targeted at children with special need. 30 children with various disabilities go through an occupation therapy sessions everyday. 55 children go through swimming/hydrotherapy once a week which is very beneficial to their muscle tone and co-ordination. This is to ensure proper follow up and continued therapy to maintain progress made. Most parents cannot afford the cost of taking the children for weekly physio/occupational therapy once their children are diagnosed with different disabilities thus making their children’s condition deteriorate.

SPECIAL UNIT EDUCATION
Our deaf unit has 15 children who are receiving early childhood education. The centre uses a lot of learning materials for the children to manipulate and make learning fun. We believe that children learn best during play thus using play to emphasize concepts. 22 deaf children have graduated since 2003 and joined different deaf primary schools after completing pre-school at the centre. They are all progressing very well in their respective schools Machakos and Ngala School for the deaf. Kevin the initiator of the deaf unit is in class 5 and topping his class |
Kindergarten graduates: It doesnt stop at little rock after turning a scar into a star
We focus on smooth transition from kindergarten to primary education. To get them there we ensure that we provide them with a complete set of uniforms, pay for their desk, lunch and tuition. Without this support these children would join primary school at the middle of the year if not ever. We support our children to join the best schools for their ability and that they have the necessary materials for their all important smooth transition to primary school.

EMPOWERING PARENTS
Income generating activities and micro enterprises for parents/SME
We have empowered over 50 parents gain different skills and training to enable them fend for their children. The guardians are engaged in different skills such as weaving, quilting, crochet, patch work, bead work, shoe making and soap making. They also learn tailoring and we have a profit making income generating activity for the school where the parents produce different uniforms for different schools within Kibera urban slums. We plan to expand this programme through opening of a uniform shop and implementing and extended sales strategy.

Library time: promoting and nurturing a reading culture in the children ( little rockers)
Every day from Monday to Saturday, we have a library session from 4pm-6pm. It caters for the Little rock graduates who attend neighboring public primary schools. The school session ends at 2pm for some children and at 4pm. The children are exposed to a reading culture while at the kindergarten and it would be an injustice not to continue. These children come to the library to read for leisure and do their homework. It is an invaluable time and resource for these children as their homes do not provide a conducive reading environment in the evenings due to lack of books, power and chores.

Football club: play as an important element in early year development
Are the club has over 60 children including deaf children. They have done us proud and won local tournament titles (Ligi Ndogo, KCB), Eastern and central international tournament and retained the under 8 years cup, just to mention a few accomplishments. Little Rock is proud to be the only team around with under 6 year’s team. Our under 10 years have also shown that practice makes perfect. They are giving other teams a run for their money and won the under 10’s cup.
